This brickbuilt Sorting Hat, based on the Harry Potter movies, comes to life by turning the knob in the back. Start out by seeing it in action in this video:
The mechanism raises and lowers the hats eyebrows and causes the snarled mouth to open up.
It is built with 2 boat hull pieces at the bottom that are upsidedown. The rest of model is built up on top of the boat hull pieces using some creative and legal building techniques. The hulls give the brim of the hat quite a nice contour and shape. It took me quite a while to figure out how to build on to of the antistuds.
I made this in part for the Lego Ideas’ Magical Builds of the Wizarding World contest. It may not win any prizes, but it was a fun challenge and entertaining to puppeteer.
